Game review: Plants Vs Zombies

The master of addictive, charming puzzle games, developer PopCap is renowned for creating titles that players keep coming back to time and again.

Plants Vs Zombies has seen countless incarnations across multiple gaming platforms, but the series has finally arrived on Nintendo DS, and it works a treat. Approach this one with caution however, it may just take over your life.

The aim is to see off the endless hordes of shuffling undead descending on your house.

As they plod their way across your front lawn, you can plant a variety of flowers, vegetables and fruit to slow them down. Sunflowers are the most valuable of all, as they generate sunlight which is used as currency to buy more plants.

Pea shooters spit large peas at zombies to defeat them, while Venus fly traps simply gobble them up whole.

While it starts off rather laboured, very quickly you will have a collection of more than 30 plants at your disposal to battle increasingly smart and tough zombie variants and more obstructions such as gravestones or backyard swimming pools.

When it ramps up, it's a frantic title with a massive adventure mode that is good for days of repeat play.

Once the story mode is over, you're free to dip back into quick play and try your hand at your favourite stages at leisure.

It's a bit of a bargain, as the amount of play time on offer here is incredibly generous.
