Game review: Halo Wars
XB360, £44.99)
SET 20 years before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved, the latest chapter of the Halo series gives an insight into how the brutal war waged between the UNSC human forces and ruthless alien race The Covenant escalated into a universe-wide threat. However, this is Halo with a different face, as it shifts away from the first-person shooter fans are accustomed to, opting for a real-time strategy style instead.
While many strategy titles on consoles fall flat due to the limitations of joypad control, Halo Wars is streamlined in a way that keeps things simple. With most RTS titles, you can build structures such as barracks or war factories for building vehicles. However, you are restricted to a few of these surrounding your HQ and cannot freely build anywhere you please. This restriction can irk somewhat, especially for those more accustomed to the freedom offered by the Command & Conquer series.
The main campaign is lengthy and missions are complimented by superb cut-scenes which explain the story quite well. As you progress, more construction options and troop types open up, from Warthog jeeps to Scorpion tanks, as well as the all-powerful Spartans. Secondary attack options allow you to tackle each fight with a bit of creativity.
With scores awarded after each mission, game-altering skull pick-ups to seek out and expansive skirmish and co-op modes, Halo Wars is a fine addition to the series, albeit a simplified, toned-down one.
