Gaelic channel pulls in 600,000 viewers
MORE than 600,000 viewers tuned into the first week of broadcasts from BBC Alba, Scotland's new Gaelic channel, the broadcaster said yesterday.
A poll of more than 1,000 people showed 15 per cent of Scottish adults watched programming on BBC Alba for more than 15 minutes.
Critics had questioned whether the channel, broadcasting documentaries and drama in Gaelic with sports and music, would pull enough viewers to justify its 14 million budget. The BBC set a 250,000 target.
Supporters said the channel, broadcast only on satellite and available to about a third of Scottish viewers, must be shown digitally on Freeview.
"It's an amazing figure. It shows the urgent necessity of ensuring the rest of the population can access it," said the Western Isles MP Angus McNeil.
