Gaelic centre to be silenced

A GAELIC learners' organisation is set to close this month, despite calls to save it by leading experts on minority languages.

The voluntary group TAIC, formerly known as CNSA, formed in 1982, earned an international reputation for delivering pre-school and adult learning services to families using Gaelic at home.

Last year the national Gaelic development agency Brd na Gidhlig ruled no further core funding would be available after contracts expire this month.

The group has closed an office in Glasgow, and the Inverness centre, with seven staff, is due to close on 31 March.

Support came from Professor Joshua Fishman, a world authority on endangered languages, who urged the Scottish Government to restore and increase its funding.

He described TAIC as "one of the few successful language revitalisation efforts in the entire world".
