Funeral held for Scot in South Africa carjacking
The funeral of a Scottish scientist shot dead in a car-jacking at a petrol station in South Africa was held yesterday.
Rory Smart, 61, was killed by a man who walked up to him holding a 9mm handgun at a forecourt in a Johannesburg suburb.
The chemical scientist, from Fortrose in the Black Isle, was shot once in the chest before his attacker drove off in his black BMW 320i. He died at the scene.
It was the third time Mr Smart had been mugged in South Africa
The funeral was held in Fortrose Church of Scotland and thereafter at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Cemetery.
Mr Smart had worked in South Africa for more than 20 years and last visited the Highlands at Christmas. He planned to retire as technical director of a mining support company in Johannesburg next year and return to the Black Isle.
Mr Smart owned his family home, Kindeace Lodge, in Canonbury Terrace, Fortrose, although it has been rented out for the past four years.
Colleagues at Minova RSA, the company Mr Smart had worked for since 1987, have held a memorial service for him.
