Fundraising midwife is off to Malawi

A LOTHIANS midwife who has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a hospital in Malawi is to spend six months there setting it up.

Linda McDonald, a midwife at the Simpson's unit, will take unpaid leave and stay in the country's capital Lilongwe.

She has already raised 170,000 for the Bwaila Maternity Hospital in the city and will help set it up, and said long-term she would like to forge links with the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

She said: "I'm going to work as a midwife and will carry out a research programme to try to improve care for the women there.

"I also hope to work one day a week in an HIV programme. My dream would be to build stronger links with Simpson's and Bwaila for the benefit of all, and I am forging links with the school of nursing in Malawi."
