Fuelling sex abuse
Religiously minded people are always keen to point out how immoral and wicked the world would be if we did not have religion to fall back on for spiritual guidance.
In fact, many strict religious communities offer advantages to sexual predators, with adults who trust their religious leaders without hesitation, a disinclination to report abuse to outside authorities and an ethos of silence and shame that conspires to keep victims quiet, giving sexual predators an opportunity they would not get within a secular community.
Such abuse will continue until we break the spell of religious dogma that continues to blight so many lives.
