Former addicts recruited to offer support

RECOVERED alcoholics and drug addicts are being recruited as part of a drive to reduce substance-abuse problems.

In a unique scheme running in Midlothian, where 20 people have lost their lives to drink and drug cocktails in the last year, those who have recovered from substance abuse are being targeted to help.

Organisers of the project hope that their unique insight will add to the scope of expertise currently provided by medics and charity workers.

Joe Pamphilon, a project worker at Bonnyrigg's Orchard Centre, said: "Peer support is an idea that has been gaining prominence in mental health for some years, especially in America, where many projects of this kind exist."
