Forces defuse Armagh bomb 'aimed at police'
SECURITY forces have foiled an attempt to kill police officers in Northern Ireland.
It was revealed last night that bomb disposal experts dealt with a suspicious device in Friary Road in Armagh on Wednesday after a member of the public raised the alert.
District Commander Chief Superintendent Alasdair Robinson praised a member of the public who raised the alarm, saying: "It was that information that helped us pinpoint exactly where the device was. The road was closed and army technical officers called to the scene.
"A number of nearby houses were also evacuated. The device was then made safe."
Mr Robinson said the bomb had the capacity to cause injury and death, adding: "I have no doubt the aim was to kill police officers."
The SDLP mayor of Armagh, Thomas O'Hanlon, condemned those responsible.
