Food for thought

All our politicians should bow there heads in shame as the latest figures on child poverty show that one out of seven children live in poverty in the UK (your report, 18 July).

It is a matter of national shame that in 2013 we are resigned to accepting the desperate situation that so many children live in homes that are inadequately heated and without food on the table as the fastest growing charities in the UK are food banks.

Perhaps the time has come for some radical changes, starting with all school meals to be served free to all children, which would at least provide the healthy basis of essential daily nourishment
