Folk album review: The Gibson Brothers
THE GIBSON BROTHERS Ring The Bell **** Compass Records 745062, £12.72
Easy on the ear and filled with great licks, the latest from these two guys from upper New York State is filled with sunny bluegrass songs, performed in close harmony with trickily articulate instrumental asides.
Recorded in the Hillbilly Central building in Nashville, and including Tom Petty's song Angel Dream among those written by the brothers, these songs avoid sentimentality, even in lyrics such as "Mother way up in Heaven, Mother we'll meet again".
