Flight chiefs' warning on displays near airports

THE Civil Aviation Authority today warned people about the dangers of setting off fireworks near airports.

Since 2000, the organisation has received 23 reports from UK pilots who have been unexpectedly dazzled by fireworks, while four British aircraft have been directly hit - one in 2002, one in 2002, and two in 2003.

Earlier this year, a 20-year-old man was convicted after setting off a number of fireworks in his garden under the flight path approach to Edinburgh Airport, and received a prison sentence.

Organisers of major public events featuring fireworks, lasers or searchlights must contact the CAA with details of their display so that pilots flying over the area can be made aware of the potential risks.
