Flats plan approved for gap site gutted by fire
FLATS and shops are to be built on a gap site in Leith eight years after buildings were destroyed by fire.
Gregor Properties was granted permission to build the development on Great Junction Street by city councillors at a meeting yesterday. The firm plans to build 30 flats and eight retail units, which could be joined to produce larger shops.
The 1720 sq metre site was formerly occupied by an indoor market and a supermarket but it was destroyed by fire in September 2000. The development will be in the Leith conservation area.
Councillors had postponed the decision in May, because they were concerned that none of the new flats would count as affordable housing.
Councillor Stuart McIvor, said: "We are really keen to see a pretty horrible gap site built up. I think the people of Leith will be fairly pleased."
