Firefighters tackle blaze at Leith Banana Flats

FIREFIGHTERS today tackled a blaze in a block of flats in Leith.

Crews rushed to the blaze in a second-floor apartment in Cables Wynd House, known locally as the Banana Flats, after receiving a call at 10.15am this morning.

There was no evacuation from the block of flats and no reports of casualties. Firefighters also said the flat was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.

A fire investigation unit was on scene this morning to establish the cause of the blaze.

Group commander John Hanlin, of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue, said: “The flat has been badly damaged due to the high winds which helped spread the fire and there was also smoke damage to the adjacent flat.”
