Firearms legislation rejected
TALKS between Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, and Kenny MacAskill, the justice minister, for more powers for Scotland over firearms legislation ended in stalemate yesterday.
Mr MacAskill had pressed for a trial of a licensing regime for air guns north of the Border and full devolution of firearms legislation. However, the plea was rejected by Ms Smith.
A Home Office spokesman said "We have concerns about creating a situation in which the entire body of firearms law in Scotland could differ markedly from that in England."
