Filmmaker creates trailer for 3D movie based on rare comic

POPPING on a pair of 3D glasses and watching the action jump out the screen has almost become as common as buying popcorn at the cinema.

But one of the Capital's only 3D filmmakers knows just how painstaking it is to make a good 3D movie - after it took him three weeks to create a four-minute cartoon.

The work was worth it, because Andrew Murchie's film, Four Play, earned him a prestigious award - and he has dived straight into several 3D Edinburgh projects.

The budding 3D filmmaker was named winner of the Excellence in Visual Arts category at InvaZion 3D Film Festival after being crowned the best by judges from top film companies including Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks.

He was also the only 3D filmmaker from the UK selected to showcase his work at the popular LA 3D Movie Festival.

Now the 46-year-old will be creating a trailer for locally-made film Electric Man, produce a 3D comic and poster for the same film and is currently making a 3D music video for a song he wrote himself.

Mr Murchie, from Cramond, said his time-consuming hobby took up all of his spare time and weekends, but was worth the effort.

He said: "I hardly ever get to see my wife and kids, but the work is really rewarding.

"I used to love 3D films but my interest was reignited when Avatar and Alice and Wonderland came out. They've made 3D a big business again, even though the red and blue glasses can be unfashionable.

"Winning the award felt great. I also got a 3D television worth about 1500,"

The filmmaker is now creating the marketing material for Electric Man, a film about a rare comic, that will be filmed entirely across the Capital. A 25000 kitty was raised from local donations to create the independent film, and creators will start shooting scenes in September.

Mr Murchie, whose 3D videos have received over 250,000 hits on YouTube, said: "The teaser will be about three or four minutes, but the whole film won't be in 3D. The comic will offer a bit of a retro blast from the past.

"It's a lot of work, but it's fun challenging myself."
