Film review: The Final Destination
THE FINAL DESTINATION (15) ** DIRECTED BY: DAVID R ELLIS STARRING: BOBBY CAMPO, SHANTEL VANSANTEN, NICK ZANO, HALEY WEBB
THE definite article in the title of this latest, 3D-enhanced instalment of the Casualty-for-sickos franchise suggests the end of the line – something that wasn't the case after 3D Friday the 13th and Nightmare sequels, but which all those behind this increasingly tired-seeming format might do well to consider.
Clever opening credits replay the most spectacular deaths from earlier Destinations, then the formula kicks in: those who cheated death in a major tragedy – here, a racetrack inferno – are picked off in unlikely ways, the twisted invention in the staging undermined by the monotonous regularity of the timing.
Even as Friday night trash, this feels somewhat samey. At 82 minutes, it's efficiently nasty and hollow – but nasty and hollow nonetheless.
