Film review: Rumba

RUMBA (PG) **** DIRECTED BY: DOMINIQUE ABEL, FIONA GORDON STARRING: DOMINIQUE ABEL, FIONA GORDEN, PHILIPPE MARTZ

The spirit of Jacques Tati lives on in this droll, near wordless and, at times, ingeniously staged comedy from writers/directors/stars Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon.

They play Dom and Fiona, a happy couple who spend their days teaching at a primary school in rural France and their spare time competing in (and winning) Latin dance competitions. They have an idyllic life together, but this soon comes to an end in an absurd fashion when a thoughtless, suicidal man (Philippe Martz) attempts to end his life by stepping in front of their car. Swerving to avoid him, the subsequent crash leaves Fiona minus a foot and Dom minus his memory. Rather than dwelling on such misery, though, Abel and Gordon use it as a springboard for some amusingly offbeat comedy as their characters repeatedly try to rebuild their lives together, a course of action fraught with hazards brought about by their new-found disabilities.
