Figures show rise in repeat alcohol illnesses
MORE than a third of people taken to hospital with alcohol illnesses are repeat admissions in the Lothians, it has been revealed.
Fresh figures from the Scottish Government have shown that for more than 2,000 people admitted last year locally, it was not their first trip to casualty on alcohol-related issues.
Politicians said the stark statistics proved that relentless anti-alcohol messages were simply not getting through to a significant number of people and more had to be done to curb the rise.
In 2003, only a quarter of admissions were repeat ones, while the total number of hospital cases in 2008 was the highest yet at 6,680.
Lothians MSP Gavin Brown said: "These figures are very worrying and show that many people are still ignoring the warnings over the problems associated with excess alcohol consumption."
