Fewer children face hearings

FEWER city youngsters are being referred to a children's hearing for offences, figures have shown.

Statistics released following a parliamentary question show that in the last year 137 children between the ages of eight and 12 were referred to a hearing.

This compares to 165 in 2007 and 181 the year before that.

Cases in East Lothian have remained roughly the same, with 59 being referred over the last three years, while drops have also been noticed in Midlothian and West Lothian. The figures were released by children's minister Adam Ingram.
