Fellowship award for two city scientists
TWO Edinburgh scientists have been awarded research fellowships as part of a scheme that aims to promote the role of women working in science.
Dr Ashleigh Griffin and Dr Sarah Reece, who both carry out their work at Edinburgh University, were two of only four people to be awarded the 15,000 prize to further their research career as part of the UK and Ireland fellowships for women in science.
The fellowships offer awards to outstanding female post-doctoral researchers, and are designed to promote the importance of ensuring the greater participation of women in science.
Dr Reece intends to use the fellowship to employ a part-time graduate research assistant to continue her work with malaria parasites.
Dr Griffin plans to investigate what kind of social strategies are advantageous in populations of bacteria infecting the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients.
