Feedback sought on revival plan for tourist village
THE public is to be given a say in the development of John o' Groats next week.
The latest plan will come under public scrutiny when an exhibition is held detailing progress on a new masterplan for the attraction.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has commissioned planning consultancy GVA Grimley to produce the masterplan, which is likely to include shops, food and drink outlets and tourist accommodation. The recommendations are expected to be ready by August.
About 170,000 people visit the village each year, but it has been claimed they stay an average of only ten minutes.
It is hoped a new quality retail centre can be created along with other developments to capitalise on the area's spectacular landscape and heritage.
The development of John o' Groats is seen as a "transformational project" for HIE and a high priority project for the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership.
Carol Gunn, of HIE, said: "It is important to the long-term economic future of the area that we identify a way forward for John o' Groats which is ambitious and meets the expectations of visitors. The local partnership of public bodies, businesses and community groups is working together to see the area fulfil its potential."
Richard Slipper, of Edinburgh-based GVA Grimley, added: "Local consultation plays a major role in our planning process and the public and any other bodies coming along will be able to make their comments count."
The exhibition will be held next Tuesday at the Seaview Hotel in John o' Groats between noon and 8pm.
