Fears grow for killer
A CONVICTED murderer who is missing from an open prison may not have absconded willingly, a detective said yesterday.
Tayside Police have been hunting for John Brown since he failed to return to Castle Huntly prison, near Dundee, last Wednesday following a period of home leave.
Brown, 57, was jailed for life in 1976 for a hammer attack that claimed the life of Thomas Quinn. He absconded 48 hours after another Castle Huntly inmate, Brian Martin, had handed himself in to police after being on the run for a week, sparking calls for Kenny MacAskill, the justice secretary, to resign.
Detective Sergeant Jim Smith said yesterday: "We are concerned because there is nothing to suggest that John would have willingly absconded. This is completely out of character."
