Fears for 7,500 post offices
THE government should introduce safeguards to protect post offices before privatising Royal Mail, a Commons committee has claimed.
A report by the Scottish affairs select committee has warned that the post office network is in a "precarious position" and up to 7,500 UK branches "remain vulnerable to closure".
The report said it was "not clear" how legislation going through the Commons would protect customers in both deprived urban areas and remote rural ones. It is feared commercial muscle will force the closure of thousands of branches.
Postal services minister Ed Davey insists no branches will be closed by the government.
