Father killed after alcohol snatch attack

DETECTIVES investigating a young father's murder said yesterday that he died after he was attacked by someone trying to steal his alcohol.

Paul Woods, 29, stopped to buy drinks at a shop in the Maryhill area of Glasgow as he and a friend walked home from watching Celtic's match against Braga in a pub on Wednesday evening.

The father-of-two was found seriously injured opposite the Maryhill Tavern and was taken to the city's Southern General Hospital, where he died on Thursday.

Detective Inspector John Kennedy said: "As he waited outside the shop for his friend, he was approached by at least three people both male and female, and it would appear that one of them either punched him or knocked him to the ground as they tried to steal his alcohol."

"We would like to thank those who stopped to assist him as he lay bleeding."
