Father Christmases slow down as Santa Run turned into Santa Stroll
A BUMPER turn-out is expected at this year's Father Christmas festivities after the Santa Run was turned into a more sedate Santa Stroll.
An extra 500 Santas are expected to take part in Sunday's fancy dress walk through the city centre, making 2500 in total.
The stroll will provide the finale to a weekend of Christmas-themed family events taking place in West Princes Street Gardens.
Nickie Gott, Edinburgh's Christmas producer, said: "There are a number of new events that bring an extra element of Christmas cheer to the programme this year.
"The new Santa stroll means that even more people can get involved and it's a great activity for the whole family to participate in and enjoy the magical city of Edinburgh."
The fun kicks off at noon on Saturday with the arrival of Santa and his reindeer and the opening of an igloo village at West Princes Street Gardens.
In the igloo village, which will stay open until December 23, there will be storytelling sessions as well as craft workshops, where children can decorate their own Christmas ornaments with a little help from Santa's elves.
A Santa train will travel around the park parameters, giving children the chance to take a trip through the heart of Edinburgh's Christmas site. Horse and carriage rides will be available for older children and adults.
The Santa stroll begins at 3pm on Sunday. It has a new route this year, starting at West Princes Street Gardens and finishing in the Grassmarket.
Lord Provost George Grubb will launch the stroll, which will raise money for two charities – Radio Forth's Cash for Kids, and When You Wish Upon A Star.
Entry to the Santa Stroll costs 10 and includes a free costume, with all proceeds going to the charities.
To register, call 0844 481 1221 or sign up from noon on Sunday at the Ross Band Stand.
