Scotland is bracing for widespread thunderstorms in the second half of this week, after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for large swathes of the UK.

It comes as a band of low pressure and high humidity sweeps across the country.

On Thursday, the forecasters predict outbreaks of thunder and lightning over all of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and southwest England.

By Friday, the whole of Scotland and the rest of the UK - excluding the Shetland islands - will be subject to thunderstorm warnings.

And on Saturday, while southwest England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the westernmost parts of Scotland are predicted to escape the bad weather, the rest of mainland Scotland and the North of England will not.

The weather warnings issued by the Met Office say there is a “small chance” that homes and businesses across the country could be flooded, and warned that lightning strikes could cause damage to buildings.

It warned of the possibility of difficult driving conditions, delays to public transport, and the “slight chance” of power cuts.
