Fair warning over risk of skin cancer
FAIR-SKINNED people who do not tan well are most at risk from skin cancer this summer, a city dermatologist has said.
Speaking as part of national Sun Awareness Week, Dr Alex Holme, a consultant at the capital's Spire Hospital, said action had to be taken to curb the rise in skin cancer cases.
He said: "Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, occurs most in fair-skinned people who tan poorly.
"Often they have blonde or red hair, blue or green eyes, and freckle easily; this accounts for much of the Scottish population.
"To prevent melanoma, everyone, but particularly children, should practise sun protection between the months of April and September, and whenever they are abroad."
