Face mask 'can curb heart risk'
SCIENTISTS at Edinburgh University say wearing a face mask can reduce the risk of heart disease from traffic fumes.
They went to China to carry out their research in Beijing, one of the most polluted cities in the world.
They found pollution from car exhausts caused arteries to stiffen, resulting in higher blood pressure and reduced blood flow to the heart. But wearing a face mask reduced the impact of fumes by up to 98 per cent.
It is the first time face masks have been tested for their efficiency, even though they are commonly worn by cyclists in Beijing and elsewhere.
Dr Mills said: "The most effective turned out to be a cheap and simple face mask designed to reduce occupational exposure to dust."
