Extreme sports fans in rush to join Rat Race

HUNDREDS of extreme sports competitors took part in the fifth annual Edinburgh Rat Race at the weekend testing themselves to the limit by mountain biking, climbing, running and kayaking around a mystery course.

The event challenges teams to navigate through the city's labyrinthine streets, parklands and surrounding countryside by a variety of exciting means.

The exact route was kept a closely-guarded secret until the first day of the competition.

Visitors to West Princes Street Gardens were also given the chance to practise for next year's Rat Race on a climbing tower at the event's Adventure Village.

The Edinburgh race was one of eight taking place across the UK and Ireland at the weekend. About 500 athletes have so far signed up to take part.

Cash raised from this year's activities will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
