'Extrava-gappers' splash out on breaks
REDUNDANCY-HIT executives are taking "extrava-gapper" breaks and are prepared to splash out on their trips, it was revealed today.
Many City and professional workers are either losing their jobs or being given extended time off, according to a lifestyle management company.
They are choosing to travel and are avoiding the normal gap-year destinations and going to more expensive places, such as Japan and Italy.
For those looking for the exotic, but without spending too much, Bangkok remained one of the best destinations, the firm, WhiteConcierge, said.
Managing director Will Holroyd said: "Over the last nine months we've seen a surge in clients asking us for advice and support in organising extended career breaks.
"For many professionals, finding themselves out of work or dissatisfied with their career progression, this is a great opportunity to take stock and to experience other cultures and lifestyles. The majority of these extrava-gappers have the resources to enjoy a comfortable trip."
He added: "As the recession grips the UK harder, we expect to see many more clients turn an unfortunate experience into a very positive and exciting one before returning to work when the economy eventually picks up."
