Extradited suspect in custody over Moira Jones death
A MAN arrested over the murder of Moira Jones arrived in Scotland yesterday and was set to appear in court today, after he was extradited from Slovakia.
The Crown Office confirmed last night that a 32-year-old man had been brought to Scotland, was being held in custody by Strathclyde Police and was expected to appear in Glasgow Sheriff Court.
The body of Miss Jones, 40, was found in bushes in Queen's Park, in the South Side of Glasgow, on the morning of 29 May.
The man was arrested by Slovakian police last month after the Crown Office had secured a European arrest warrant.
The suspect – who has not been named – was brought before a specially-convened court in Bratislava, where extradition proceedings were started on 19 June.
Authorities at the time had been unable to say how long it would take for the process to be completed.
The murder of Miss Jones prompted a largescale investigation, involving more than 100 officers.
Queen's Park was closed for two weeks as police examined the scene and hundreds of statements were recorded, with 250 DNA samples taken.
Strathclyde Police staged a stop-and-check operation that involved more than 50 officers questioning 1,600 motorists, bus passengers and pedestrians at five main checkpoints around the Queen's Park area.
