Extra support for Hepatitis C care network
A TEAM tasked with ridding the Lothians of hepatitis C has been given extra resources.
NHS Lothian's Managed Care Network for the infection wants to reduce the number of cases and find people who have the disease but don't know it.
More needle exchanges have been launched, while a blood-borne virus nurse has been brought in to test people in prison.
Hilda Steven, from the public health department, said: "The early symptoms can range from aches and pains and loss of appetite to extreme tiredness. In some cases people have the disease for more than 25 years before they are diagnosed. We need a new emphasis on preventing the spread of hepatitis C, particularly among injecting drug users."
