Exhibition bids fond farewell to Bonnington with memories
IT has been a fixture in the community for more than 130 years.
So as Bonnington Primary in Leith prepares to close its doors for good next Friday, past and present pupils, teachers and parents gathered to bid it farewell.
Pupils gave members of the public guided tours round the school yesterday, as well as showing them the vast amount of old photos and memorabilia that has been collected for an exhibition.
The school has been appealing for former pupils to send in their memories through radio and poster campaigns, newsletters and social networking site Friends Reunited.
Word of the exhibition spread quickly and former pupils from as far afield as America sent in their pictures and memories.
One person who wanted to say goodbye was former headteacher Margaret Brown, who worked in the school for around 20 years after becoming assistant head in 1967.
Mrs Brown was well-remembered by old pupils as she walked around the exhibition – but admitted she did not always remember everyone who speaks to her.
She said: "I get people coming up to me in the street saying I was their headteacher.
"I enjoy hearing how they're getting on although I can't say I remember them all. The time I spent here was a very happy time. It's sad it's coming to an end."
Former pupil Peter Dickson, who started at the school in 1938 said he was sad the community was going to lose it.
The 75-year-old retired engineer, who still lives in the area, said: "I loved it at this school.
"I was actually crying when I left because it was so good."
Bonnington is one of three primaries that councillors voted to close last month due to falling pupil numbers in the city.
Lismore Primary in Bingham will also close next week, while Westburn in Wester Hailes will shut next summer.
Lisa Manders, chair of the school's parent council, said: "I don't think it's really sunk in yet with the children and I don't think it will until the last day next week. I know they will all be upset."
Headteacher Valerie Connolly said: "We wanted to do something to celebrate Bonnington's contribution to education and caring for children in this community."
