A FORMER Hearts chief executive has taken up a key role in the campaign to keep Scotland in the UK.

Phil Anderton – who was also in charge of Scottish rugby – has been appointed to the board of the cross-party Better Together organisation.

Campaign chair and former chancellor Alistair Darling described the 47-year-old as an “individual of the highest calibre”. Mr Anderton, who currently works as a management consultant based in Scotland, said: “Our trading relationships with England, Wales and Northern Ireland are vital to our businesses here in
Scotland.

“We should be looking for ways to strengthen these ties, not to throw up unnecessary barriers. I believe that we are stronger when we work together.”
