Events: What’s on in Scotland this week

WHETHER it’s immersing yourself in Scottish traditions at Highland Games, or taking to the sea for a cruise with a difference, there’s plenty to get involved with in and around Scotland this week.

July 4th: Kenmore Highland Games

There are a number of Highland Games events staged throughout Scotland in July, with Kenmore hosting their Highland Games on July 4th, including for the first time, a tug-of-war competition, in addition to massed pipe bands, caber-tossing and many more activities. The Kenmore Highland Games start at 5.30pm and go on until 9.30pm, but the short time period should ensure plenty of activities are packed into the four hours.

July 5th: Stonehaven Folk Festival

The Stonehaven Folk Festival kicks off on July 5th, lasting until July 8th. This year’s festival sees the introduction of music workshops for children, as well as the usual performances from the great and the good of the folk scene, including Brian McNeill, the Fred Morrison Trio and the Old Blind Dogs. Danse McCabre will also host a ceilidh session on the Friday night.

July 6th: Malts Cruise

A cruise with a difference, the Malts Cruise allows crews to sail in company, or independently, to selected rendezvous for social events. The format is centred around free cruising, allowing regulars, or first time sailors to travel under their own steam. The cruise itself begins with a ‘parade of sail’ in Oban Bay, before heading up to Tobermory, and then onto the Small Isles including Rum and Canna, before visiting Skye, before finishing up back at Tobermory.

July 7th: Doune and Dunblane Agricultural Show

The Doune and Dunblane Agricultural Society, which, according to their website, aims to promote agriculture and country pursuits in the community, hosts their one-day agricultural show this Saturday, with livestock judging, horse and pony competitions along with crookmaking demonstrations, trade stands and a craft marquee and a vintage tractor parade.

July 8th: Girvan half-marathon

The local athletic club have taken on the organisation of this event, taking place this Sunday, and starting at midday in Hamilton Park. This year is the 30th anniversary of the race, and the organisers have laid on extra prizes as a result. Entrants have enjoyed perfect weather for the past few years, and although the forecast doesn’t look too promising, don’t let that dampen your spirits.
