EU to impose sanctions on Iceland and Faroes

THE European Union is today expected to move to impose sanctions on Iceland restricting fishing levels of mackerel.

Maria Damanaki, the European Fisheries Commissioner, will act following the refusal of both the Icelandic and Faroese governments to enter into international agreement on the division of mackerel catches for this year.Last summer, the Faroe Islands set a mackerel quota of 85,000 tonnes for 2010 - more than three times their previous allowable catch. Iceland set a quota of 130,000 tonnes, which has risen to 146,818 tonnes for 2011.

The mackerel industry is worth 135 million a year to Scottish fisherman. Scottish Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson welcomed the ban. "I fully support the Commission in taking this dramatic step," he said.

"The behaviour of Iceland over north-east Atlantic mackerel stocks has been grossly irresponsible."
