Around 18,000 properties were left without electricity after a power cut thought to have been caused by a lightning strike.

SSE customers in the Western Isles were hit by a loss of electricity at 10.30am this morning.

The company used generators to restore power to most properties by lunchtime, apart from a small pocket on Harris.

Around 270 properties on Skye were also hit by a power cut at around 4.20am in a separate incident, also thought to have been caused by lightning.

An SSE spokesman said: “We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.

“The priority has been to get their power back on and then establish what the fault was and get it repaired.”
