Probe into Dounreay contamination scare

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after traces of radioactive contamination were detected on the boots of workers preparing to leave the Dounreay nuclear complex in Caithness.

The alert was sounded at the site as some 14 workers were preparing to leave a building in the complex, which has been scheduled for demolition.

The area around the building was sealed off after the alert on Wednesday night.

Further checks confirmed the contamination had been confined to a small area within the nuclear plant.

A spokeswoman for Dounreay Site Restoration said: “Traces of contamination were found on the shoes of a number of operators who were preparing a building for demolition.

“The contamination was detected when the operators prepared to leave the building.”
