Inquiry after third dead buzzard found

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a buzzard was found poisoned on a Highland estate, police have confirmed.

It is the third dead buzzard found in the past year on the Gledfield Estate in Sutherland.

An investigation involving the Department of Agriculture and the Rural Payments Agency has been launched.

PC Dominic Corcoran, of Northern Constabulary, said: "The poisoning of birds of prey is highly irresponsible and criminal. It threatens the wildlife for which the Highlands are renowned. These offences are treated very seriously."

Bob Elliot, of RSPB Scotland, said that, despite a crackdown on wildlife crime, there did not seem to be a reduction in the number of birds being purposefully killed in Scotland.

"The worrying thing about poisoning incidents is that illegally poisoned baits placed in the countryside can be taken by any animal or bird."
