Fishermen delay start of salmon season again season
THE operators of Scotland’s remaining coastal netting stations are to again delay their traditional February start to the netting season to help conserve vital stocks of wild Atlantic salmon.
The Salmon Net Fishing Association of Scotland, the industry body which represents the majority of Scottish salmon netters, announced yesterday that its membership would be operating a voluntary delay until April for the 12th year in succession in response to “perceived conservation concerns.”
Their legal right to fish usually extends from February to the end of August each year.
James Mackay, the chairman of the association, said: “We began this policy in the year 2000 in response to concerns from some quarters around the strength of the early spring salmon stock component.
“2012 marks the 12th year of this voluntary arrangement and we believe this demonstrates the willingness of our members to proactively address conservation issues, while working to protect the long term future of this unique Scottish tradition.
“The Scottish wild salmon continues to be one of the most sought after food sources worldwide.”
