BP investigates after oil leak halts production
The oil giant BP was yesterday continuing an urgent investigation into the cause of a subsea oil leak that forced it to shut down production on the first deep-water oilfield in the Atlantic frontier, west of Shetland.
Production was halted on the Foinaven field, 120 miles west of Shetland, on Sunday after a “hairline” crack was discovered during a routine check on an pipeline almost 1,500ft below the surface.
A BP spokesman said it had yet to determine how much oil had leaked and how long it had been escaping, though the source had been identified.
