Boost for green technologies in Scotland

GLASGOW has been chosen for a new £50m centre which aims to accelerate the commercialisation of green technologies.
Strathclyde University will be the headquarters of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.
There will be a second base at the National Renewable Energy Centre in north east England.
The centre will focus on technologies for offshore wind, wave and tidal power and is designed to bridge the gap between university research and full commercialisation.
Speaking at the launch of the centre in Glasgow, Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Our offshore renewable sector can compete on a global scale and has huge potential for growth. If we can harness that, we will generate billions of pounds for the economy whilst creating thousands of job opportunities at the same time.
“The Catapult centre will be based in a Scottish world-class centre of excellence, part of a collaboration with a centre in the north east of England.”

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 09:50 AMNot holding my breath on this one. So far the renewables industry investment in this country has seen very poor returns for its money. We cannot hope to compete with the established wind turbine companies which are already suffering share price drops and we cannot compete with the likes of China on the manufacturing front. Wave and tidal are a very long way from proving to be commercially viable in the long term, onshore wind is a joke and the technical and logistical problems with offshore have yet to be addressed. Personally I would like to see the investment in micro renewables, energy conservation and geo thermal.

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 02:02 AMThis is good news. Yet when a patent is filled and a commercialisation process undertaken it is important that people do not panic and drop patents. It happens, it has happened and it has cost a lot of wasted time and money [on many occasions]. Commercialisation is a serious business and a darn good direction of travel.
