Actress Jenny Seagrove leads call to ban cosmetics animal testing

Jenny Seagrove: Unthinkable that animals should suffer (PA)

ACTRESS Jenny Seagrove is urging the public to support a
campaign calling for an end to animal testing for cosmetics.

The star, who is currently appearing in Noel Coward’s Volcano at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End, is backing Four Paws’ Kiss Animal Testing Goodbye campaign.

She speaks out in a video message in support of the campaign, which has been launched by Four Paws to call for an end to animal testing for cosmetics and ensure that next year’s European Union ban on the sale of animal-tested cosmetics goes ahead as planned.

The actress said: “I’m absolutely delighted to support Four Paws… It’s unthinkable that, nowadays, animals should suffer so much for cosmetics and I beg everyone to join us in kissing goodbye to cruel cosmetics.”

Animal testing for new cosmetics was banned in the EU in March 2009, but many cosmetic ingredients continue to be tested on animals outside the EU and imported for sale. This is due to be banned in March 2013, but the deadline is under threat.

Four Paws’ laboratory animals expert, Marie-Claire Macintosh, said: “Four paws along with most EU citizens, believes that animal tests for the trivial purpose of cosmetics must end, regardless of alternatives available.

“Any further delay to a full ban could mean many more animals will needlessly suffer as companies will simply conduct animal tests outside the EU and sell their products here. Vital research into alternative methods may also be affected.”
