Singer Waits brings trademark growl to city

TOM WAITS, the legendary American songwriter and performer, is to play two concerts at the Edinburgh Playhouse as part of his latest tour.

The dates are the only UK concerts on the European leg of his Glitter and Doom tour, and will be the first time Grammy award-winning artist Waits has played in the Capital since 1987. The singer and actor, 58, who has appeared in films such as Bram Stoker's Dracula and Short Cuts, last toured the United States in 2006, when his show Orphans sold out in minutes, and the Edinburgh dates are likely to prove very popular.

Waits, from California, is known for his trademark growl, with his voice once described as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, then taken outside and run over with a car."

He will be touring with longtime musical ally Larry Taylor and others.

The concerts are being held at the Playhouse on Sunday, July 27, and Monday, July 28. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, May 27.
