Rankin gets flak on Rebus retirement
AUTHOR Ian Rankin has been getting "hate mail" from police officers - as they don't want to work longer to suit Rebus fans.
The tongue-in-cheek abuse started after Helen Eadie MSP asked the Scottish Parliament whether the police retirement age could be raised from 60 to 65.
Rankin had to retire his hard-drinking sleuth in his latest novel, Exit Music, as he had reached the mandatory retirement age.
At the launch of a Rebus exhibition at the National Library of Scotland yesterday, he joked: "I have been getting hate mail from Scottish police officers complaining that they don't want the retirement age to change.
"My police friends have been moaning about it and saying I am responsible. Although all their comments are tongue-in-cheek, it's safe to say Rebus has ruffled a few feathers."
The exhibition, with William Burke's death mask and Rankin's old computer, ends on January 13.
