Golfers' Wags have a dram good time on the town
THEY may not be classic celebrity "Wags" but the wives and girlfriends of the Senior Open golfers have shown they can enjoy a day out together.
While their partners played a warm-up round yesterday ahead of the start of the Muirfield competition this morning, the women spent the day sampling some East Lothian attractions. But unlike the Wags of the England football team during last year's World Cup, there were no allegations of bad behaviour.
The Senior Open features major stars, including Nick Faldo, Sam Torrance, Tony Jacklin, Tom Watson and Gary Player.
The Wags' programme started with a morning tour of the Glenkinchie Distillery, including a whisky tasting. This was followed by a three-course lunch at Winton House in Pencaitland.
Finally, the Bead Shop set up a special jewellery workshop so the women - some married to millionaire sports stars - could take home a souvenir of their time in the county.
Susan Smith, East Lothian's economic development manager, said the championships had a real buzz and added: "After the final putt has been played and the excitement has died down, there are economic benefits from hosting such a high-profile event.
"We hope the players, their families and all the spectators will enjoy their time in East Lothian and consider a repeat performance."
