Five young stars in the running to win Bafta award
NOEL Clarke, Rebecca Hall and Michael Fassbender were among the actors announced yesterday as in the running for a Bafta award that recognises talent of the future.
Also nominated for the gong, the Orange Rising Star Award, are Superbad's Michael Cera and Toby Kebbell, who starred in the films Control and Dead Man's Shoes.
The award, for those who are establishing themselves, is the only one at the Orange British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the British public.
A jury including Scots stars James McAvoy and Kelly Macdonald selected the five nominees from recommendations from the film industry and Bafta members.
The nominations were announced at Bafta headquarters in London by last year's winner, Shia LaBeouf, who was speaking via a video link. LaBeouf said he had been "delighted" to win the award – especially as it was voted for by the public.
Fassbender's performance as IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's award-winning Hunger earned much acclaim. He is currently shooting Quentin Tarantino's new film Inglorious Bastards.
Hall was first seen aged ten in Channel 4's The Camomile Lawn. She recently starred in Woody Allen's film Vicky Cristina Barcelona opposite Scarlett Johansson and in Frost/Nixon with Michael Sheen and Frank Langella.
Clarke wrote, directed and starred in Adulthood, one of the highest-grossing films of 2008 and the follow-up to Kidulthood.
