'Decorator' Vettriano is Great Scot

ARTIST and self-confessed "wall decorator" Jack Vettriano was crowned this year's Great Scot at an award ceremony last night.

Last year's winner, Sir Jackie Stewart, presented him with an engraved bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky worth 3,000 at the event in central London.

The Fife-born artist paid tribute to his countrymen Billy Connolly, Sir Alex Ferguson and fellow nominee Ian Rankin and said he was looking forward to telling his father he had won.

He said: "He will say 'Aye son, that is great, but if you had just stuck in and become an engineer you would have steady work and a good pension'."

He said he was honoured to count Sir Jackie among his friends, adding: "I consider I've done well in my career of wall decoration."

Other nominees who attended the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Whisky Great Scot awards included singer Sharleen Spiteri, newsreader Kirsty Young and writer Rankin.
