Bafta TV nominations: Doctor Who star receives first nod
DOCTOR Who star Matt Smith will go up against Jim Broadbent, Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Rigby in next month's Bafta television awards.
The actor, who was back on TV screens on Saturday in the first episode of the new series of the Time Lord's adventures, is nominated in the leading actor category for the first time.
Broadbent is recognised for his role in Any Human Heart, and the other nominees are Sherlock star Cumberbatch and Rigby, who played comic Eric Morecambe in Eric And Ernie.
EastEnders star Jessie Wallace is nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Pat Phoenix in BBC drama The Road To Coronation Street.
Her co-star Lynda Baron, famous for her role as Nurse Gladys Emmanuel in Open All Hours, is also nominated for the award for her portrayal of Coronation Street battleaxe Violet Carson.
The show, which followed the early days of the long-running soap, also picked up a nod for best single drama.
Channel 4's teen comedy drama about young offenders, Misfits, got four nominations including nods for its stars Robert Sheehan and Lauren Socha for supporting actor and actress.
Sherlock, Any Human Heart and The Road To Coronation Street all got three nominations.
The event takes place on Sunday May 22 at London's Grosvenor House.
Previous two-time winner and star of the BBC's South Riding Anna Maxwell Martin heads the field in the leading actress nominations.
She is up against Vicky McClure for This Is England '86, Natalie Press for Five Daughters and Juliet Stevenson for Accused.
The award show's host, Graham Norton, is also a nominee - picking up a nod for entertainment performance.
His chat show is also nominated for entertainment programme alongside The X Factor, Have I Got News For You and The Cube.
James Buckley picks up his first nomination, for male performance in a comedy programme, for his role as Jay Cartwright in The Inbetweeners.
Mad Men is nominated for the international award, which it has won for the last two years, against prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, musical comedy Glee and Danish crime thriller The Killing.
